Give Tahura and other domestic workers access to free healthcare

03/08/2026 1:00am

For as long as she can remember, Tahura has struggled with persistent weakness and frequent dizziness. Having moved from Cox’s Bazar to work as a domestic worker on Niketan Road, Dhaka, she was far from home when her health began to decline, leaving her faint and unsteady while performing daily tasks.

Concerned for her wellbeing, her employer encouraged her to visit a clinic supported by Doctors Worldwide, where zakat-funded healthcare is available at no cost to low-wage workers. At the clinic, she received a thorough consultation from a female doctor, who carefully listened to her symptoms and conducted a full examination. She was referred for essential medical tests, including blood work and a diabetes screening. All tests were provided free of charge.

The results confirmed she had diabetes, and she was prescribed the necessary medication. With regular treatment and follow-up, her condition is now under control.

Later, when she developed a fever, cold symptoms, and throat pain, initial treatment at a local pharmacy did not help. She continued to struggle for many weeks and then remembered the DWW clinic where she returned and received additional testing. Thankfully, she received the correct diagnosis (typhoid), which allowed her to receive the correct treatment, and with ongoing monitoring by the clinic’s staff, she made a full recovery.

The care Tahura received demonstrates the vital importance of accessible and reliable healthcare for low-wage workers. Through zakat-funded services, zakat-eligible patients gain timely treatment, accurate diagnoses, and attentive follow-up, ensuring recovery with dignity and peace of mind.

Accessible Healthcare, Supporting Low-Wage Workers in Need
