Helping Children Learn, Thrive and Build Resilience

11/25/2025 8:20am

In Rwanda, children make up nearly half the population, yet almost three in ten people live in poverty (UNICEF). With over 45% of the population is under 18, children often face challenges that threaten their ability to stay in school, especially when a parent is living with serious illness.

For children like 12-year-old Assouma, everyday life can feel like a constant struggle. Her parents are living with serious illnesses, and some days, the weight of uncertainty and hardship threatens to overshadow her dreams of staying in school.

Assouma used to worry about whether she would have enough to eat, or if her family could pay for her school fees. “Some nights, I couldn’t sleep thinking about tomorrow,” she says.

From Struggle to Strength

Through programmes for families receiving palliative care, supported by Doctors Worldwide, school fees, meals, learning materials, and counseling enable Assouma to focus on her studies and continue building resilience.

“She has grown so much in confidence,” says her teacher. “Now, she participates in class, helps her classmates, and dreams about a future she thought might be impossible.”

Nurturing Potential, Building Resilience

Millions of children around the world grow up amid conflict, poverty, and instability, often without the safety, care, or opportunities they deserve.

You can give vulnerable children the support they need to learn, grow, and build resilience. By supporting programmes that expand access to education and essential health care, you’re giving them the chance to rebuild hope for a healthier and happier future.
